MAKEBA

INTRODUCTION

“Mama Africa Returns”

By M.D Ley

Born to the drumbeat of injustice’s cry,
In a prison cell where freedom was shy,
She came forth wrapped not in silk, but chains —
Yet her lullaby broke through those pains.

From Sophiatown’s dust and golden light,
A girl with a voice both fierce and bright,
She sang not just tunes, but the truth of her land,
Each note a weapon, each word a stand.

With lips that danced in Xhosa clicks,
And songs that made the heartbeats mix,
She rose like a flame, soft yet strong,
A thunderous whisper — an exiled song.

They tried to silence her with exile’s blow,
But Makeba’s voice began to grow.
In Harlem halls and Paris nights,
She sang of wrongs, and human rights.

A crown of coils, no need to tame,
She bore the pride of Africa’s name.
The world called her Mama, near and far,
A voice of the people, a burning star.

But loss walked with her, shadow and flame,
Her daughter gone, her heart never the same.
Still she sang… because silence was sin,
And songs were how revolutions begin.

Then came the day Mandela called,
“Come home, the walls have finally fallen.”
She stepped on soil that once said no,
Now the land rose to greet her — Mama, hello.

Tears fell like rain on a land reborn,
As if the soil wept, for joy and scorn.
She kissed the air, she kissed the land,
And sang again — no chains, just sand.

Africa’s daughter, brave and true,
Returned in song, in spirit, in hue.
And when she fell — on a foreign shore —
Her echo rose to sing once more.
